Moroccan health network warns of rising violence linked to mentally ill homeless
Wednesday 27 August 2025 - 12:41

Morocco’s Network for the Defense of the Right to Health and Life issued an urgent appeal to the government over the growing number of mentally ill homeless people and a surge in violent incidents, including fatal attacks.

The group said 425 assaults were recorded in 2024, warning the crisis has become a threat to both public health and security.

The appeal followed the killing of a police officer in Imouzzer on August 22 by a mentally ill homeless man. The network blamed systemic failures in mental health care, citing only 700 psychiatrists and 1,700 psychiatric nurses nationwide, outdated facilities concentrated in major cities, and insufficient funding.

It also denounced outdated laws, expensive or missing medications, and the government’s withdrawal of reform legislation in 2023. The group called for urgent investment, new legislation, regional shelters, and national awareness campaigns to address the escalating crisis.
