Trucks carrying imported calves, held for more than three days at the port of Tangier, were released Thursday evening after the intervention of Morocco’s ministries of Agriculture and Finance, according to sources cited by Hespress.
The release followed intensive contacts between professionals and authorities, with the importer providing financial guarantees while awaiting a government decision to exempt cattle imports from customs duties and value-added tax.
Sources indicated the livestock had been stranded in difficult conditions before clearance was granted.
Professional importers said the move encouraged other operators, who had suspended loading operations abroad, to resume shipments toward Morocco. The government is expected to approve the exemption measure in the coming days.
Members of the Association of Livestock Importers urged authorities to accelerate implementation, stressing that the quota of 150,000 head of cattle earmarked for exemption should have been validated before the current period expired.
