Moroccan fishermen demand urgent upgrades to southern villages

Moroccan fishing professionals, particularly in the southern provinces, have called for urgent upgrades to traditional fishing villages, citing dire living conditions and a lack of basic infrastructure.

Speaking to Hespress, representatives said many fishermen still reside in makeshift shacks, describing the situation as incompatible with the government’s vision of a “social state.”

Youssef Bouaoultine, regional coordinator of the National Fisheries Association in Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, said artisanal fishing is an “economic lifeline” yet workers are left in “inhumane conditions.”

He criticized state investment in modernizing wholesale fish markets while neglecting housing and safety standards for fishermen.

Union activist Hamza Ettoumi pointed to Tarouma village near Laayoune, which was meant to be a model site in 2015 but has since become a “ghost village.”

He warned that poor housing and unsafe working conditions are driving fishermen away, threatening the continuity of artisanal fishing and weakening local economies.
