Spanish police have arrested nine people from a criminal network accused of stealing more than 50 vehicles, worth an estimated total of €1,250,000, dismantling them, and selling the parts to workshops in Morocco, according to Spanish media outlet El Mundo.
Eight members of the gang were arrested inside a warehouse in Guadalajara, about 60 kilometers from Madrid, while loading a large truck with stolen car parts, with the shipment to Morocco scheduled for that same night. The ninth suspect was arrested days later in Madrid.
Two brothers, said to be the leaders, allegedly used advanced devices to break into cars and oversaw both the arrival of stolen vehicles and the shipment of dismantled parts to Morocco.
The investigation revealed that the gang had been stealing between six and ten mid-range vehicles per week, mainly targeting holiday parking areas such as those near Madrid-Barajas Airport.
They targeted mid-range models because they were easier to sell on the black market, the same source reported.
After stealing them, they parked the vehicles in residential areas of Guadalajara for a week to avoid tracking devices and hinder police searches. They were then taken to a warehouse, where they were stripped for parts.
The source noted that the most valuable pieces were loaded onto trucks headed for Morocco, while the rest were dumped in the middle of the forest.
It concluded that the trucks transporting stolen parts were always preceded by scout vehicles that warned the gang of any police checkpoints ahead.
