The National Coordination of Families of the Detained and Stranded in Syria and Iraq has condemned the killing of 27 inmates in a fire at Iraq’s Nasiriyah Central Prison, calling it a “full-fledged crime” and a grave violation of human rights.
The group expressed deep concern over the safety of Moroccan detainees held in the facility, known for its history of abuse, and urged urgent action to protect their lives and well-being.
Holding the Iraqi government, its Justice Ministry, and prison authorities fully responsible, the statement demanded immediate clarification on the incident’s circumstances and the condition of Moroccan prisoners.
It called for an impartial international investigation to identify victims, determine causes, and guarantee the safety of remaining inmates.
The group appealed to Morocco’s Foreign Ministry, its embassy in Baghdad, and international human rights bodies, including the UN, to act swiftly, while urging media outlets to break the silence and shed light on the tragedy.
It also pressed for expedited repatriation of Moroccan detainees to preserve their lives and dignity.
