Visitors crowd Tetouan as summer surge overwhelms roads

Thousands of domestic and expatriate Moroccan tourists have flocked to Tetouan and its Mediterranean coastline since early August, turning the northern city into one of the summer’s busiest destinations, according to accounts gathered by Hespress.

The surge in arrivals has brought traffic congestion and prolonged delays at city entrances, underscoring both the area’s appeal and the strain on its infrastructure.

Local visitors say the influx, driven largely by beachgoers heading to Cabo Negro, M’diq, and other nearby resorts, has made access to Tetouan unusually difficult this season.

Mostapha El Fatmi, a Casablanca-based civil servant visiting with his family for the third time, told Hespress it took them “nearly three hours” to reach Cabo Negro from the city’s entrance, with “more than an hour” spent inching through the southern approach from Tangier.

The bottlenecks, marked by lines of cars stretching for kilometers, are familiar to many repeat visitors, who still consider the destination worth the fatigue. Residents report that peak-season gridlock is common in July and August, when traffic volumes exceed the capacity of existing road links.

For commuters, however, the summer slowdown disrupts daily routines. El Ouzzani, a delivery company employee traveling regularly between Tangier and Tetouan, said the journey can stretch beyond four hours during peak days, despite the relatively short distance. He noted that while the congestion is exhausting, “the economic activity generated by tourist inflows benefits everyone, directly or indirectly.”
