For the second year in a row, Muhammad has been the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The name was given to 5,721 boys, outstripping every other name on the list.
Muhammad beat Noah, which came in second with over 4,000 babies, and Oliver, which was third with over 3,000. While the ONS counts variations of the name separately, the different spellings also ranked high, with Mohammed at 21st place (1,760 babies) and Mohammad at 53rd (986 babies).
Other names of Islamic origin also made the top 100 for boys. Yusuf ranked 68th, Musa was 73rd, and Ibrahim came in at 77th. The name Yahya saw a larger increase in popularity than any other male name in the top 100 compared to last year’s list.
