The U.S. is set to establish an independent military command for operations in Africa, with Morocco being considered as a potential headquarters location, according to mediareports.
The reports emphasized that placing the command in Morocco would provide a strategically advantageous position in North Africa, enhancing logistics, improving coordination with allies, and enabling rapid deployment capabilities.
As a long-standing U.S. security partner that hosts regular joint military exercises, including the large-scale African Lion drills, establishing a permanent command presence in the kingdom would strengthen bilateral defense ties and reinforce the U.S. military posture on the continent.
The decision to establish an independent military command for operations in Africa comes after the Senate approved a new commander for the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
It also marks the official separation of AFRICOM from the U.S. Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF), reflecting a strategic shift in Washington’s military engagement on the African continent.
This restructuring takes place against the backdrop of increasing geopolitical competition in Africa, especially from China and Russia.
During Senate confirmation hearings, the incoming AFRICOM leadership stressed that both countries are broadening their presence and influence across the continent.
The report said that establishing a dedicated command aims to boost U.S. responsiveness, deepening collaboration with African partners, and safeguarding American strategic interests in the region.
Until now, AFRICOM has operated alongside European Command, which limited its ability to respond quickly to evolving threats in Africa.
The upcoming change, the same source adds, will give it more direct decision-making and strategies tailored specifically to the continent.
It also shows a growing awareness of how important Africa is in global military and economic matters, emphasized the report.
