Animal rights groups urge Morocco’s King to halt 'mass killings' of stray dogs and cats

Moroccan animal welfare groups have appealed directly to King Mohammed VI to intervene and stop what they call “systematic mass killings” of stray dogs and cats ahead of upcoming continental and international events.

In a letter to the monarch, the groups said they had “exhausted all institutional channels” without receiving a response from relevant authorities.

They urged the King to order an immediate halt to the practices, which they argue harm both the animals and Morocco’s image abroad and run counter to Islamic teachings on compassion for all living beings.

Zineb Teqan, founder and president of Erham Association for Animal Welfare and Environmental Protection, told Hespress the appeal was prompted by continued “deliberate, immediate killings” of street animals in Moroccan cities.

She said the royal intervention is now “the last option” after years of unheeded pleas to government authorities.

The Interior Ministry has previously denied such killings, describing them as “misleading foreign campaigns.” But Teqan said the reality contradicts official denials, citing ongoing videos showing abuse and neglect, and a lack of sterilization programs for stray animals.

The Erham association, alongside other groups and activists, held a protest outside Parliament on Saturday to demand humane treatment and proper management of the country’s stray animal population.
