The Maghreb Forum for Dialogue has called on Algerian authorities, led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to respond positively to King Mohammed VI’s latest Throne Day address, which renewed Morocco’s offer to turn the page on strained bilateral ties and open a new chapter of “responsible dialogue and mutual understanding.”
In a statement shared with Hespress AR, the forum urged Algeria to seize what it described as a “historic opportunity” to bridge the divide and build a shared future on a foundation of trust and mutual respect.
The group praised the king’s July 29, 2025, speech, which reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to reconciliation with its eastern neighbor and highlighted the “deep historical, human, and cultural bonds” linking the two peoples.
It said the address was marked by a “spirit of openness and realism,” emphasizing both the strategic importance of the Arab Maghreb Union and Morocco’s readiness for a “win-win” compromise over the Sahara issue that would preserve the dignity of all parties.
The forum also called on Maghreb intellectuals and civil society to actively engage in initiatives aimed at regional rapprochement, saying reconciliation and integration were no longer political options but “strategic necessities” for security, development, and prosperity in North Africa.
“Isolation and rupture cannot be the destiny of Maghreb peoples,” the statement read. “Sincere dialogue and historic reconciliation remain the only path toward a brighter, more dignified future for all the region’s citizens.”
King Mohammed VI, in his Throne Day speech Tuesday, reiterated Morocco’s commitment to good-neighborly relations and to extending a hand of friendship to Algeria. “As King of Morocco, my position is clear and consistent,” he said, calling the Algerian people “a brotherly nation bound to Moroccans by history, language, religion, geography, and a shared destiny.”
The monarch stressed that the kingdom remains committed to a united Maghreb, insisting the regional bloc “cannot exist without the full engagement of both Morocco and Algeria alongside the other brotherly states.”
