In a groundbreaking move for animal lovers, Sanlam Morocco has introduced Assur’Chien & Chat, the country’s first pet health insurance, aiming to ease the financial burden of veterinary care and meet the needs of a growing community of pet owners.

The insurance is available for dogs and cats between 3 months and 15 years old and comes in three tiered plans, Essentiel, Confort, and Premium, designed to accommodate varying budgets and coverage needs.

  • The Essentiel plan reimburses up to 70% of eligible veterinary expenses, with an annual limit of 10,000 dirhams (DH).

  • The Confort plan raises coverage to 80%, up to 12,500 DH, and includes a 500 DH allowance for preventive treatments like vaccinations and flea control.

  • The Premium plan covers 90% of costs with a cap of 15,000 DH, adds 1,000 DH in preventive care, and includes death and loss benefits of 4,000 DH and 2,500 DH, respectively.

The plans cover a broad spectrum of veterinary services, including consultations, surgeries, diagnostic tests, medications, and hospitalization. Coverage is limited to services provided by licensed veterinarians, with clear exclusions outlined to ensure policyholders are well informed.

Sanlam’s move reflects a wider societal transformation. According to the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA), pet ownership in Morocco has tripled over the past decade, and spending on pet food and veterinary care is steadily increasing. Urban centers like Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech have seen the sharpest rise in pet-related services and expenditures.

In response to this shift, Sanlam plans to expand Assur’Chien & Chat with added features such as pet-sitting services and compensation for lost pets, services increasingly sought by Morocco’s urban middle class.
