A suspected hijacking involving a small private aircraft briefly disrupted operations at Vancouver International Airport on Tuesday, prompting the diversion of nine incoming flights and a temporary landing suspension lasting nearly 40 minutes.
According to police in British Columbia, a report was received at 1:10 p.m. local time indicating that a single-engine Cessna 172 had been hijacked from Vancouver Island and was approaching Vancouver’s airspace.
The plane, which had only one occupant, the suspected hijacker, landed shortly after without incident. The individual was immediately apprehended.
Footage broadcast by Canada’s CBC showed the white Cessna surrounded by emergency vehicles on the tarmac.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the incident.
Vancouver International Airport, one of the busiest in Canada, resumed normal operations shortly after the aircraft was secured and the runway cleared.
