Authorities in Azilal have begun implementing new measures to address the long-standing demands of over 14,000 residents in the Ait Bouguemez commune.
These steps include the appointment of a doctor at the rural health center, the start of work to connect the area to telecommunications and internet networks, and the allocation of land for a new football field.
These actions follow a notable “foot march” recently undertaken by residents, who walked over 80 kilometers to the provincial headquarters.
Their march aimed to express dissatisfaction with the region’s marginalization and poor basic services, demanding improved living conditions and an end to the isolation of their mountain plateau.
The current moves align with promises made by Hassan Benkhayi, the provincial governor, during a meeting with protesting residents’ representatives. He had pledged a swift response to their key demands, particularly strengthening health services in mountain areas and enhancing connectivity.
The local health center’s medical team has now been reinforced with approximately seven qualified medical and nursing staff, including a specialist doctor, a move civil society activists see as a significant step towards addressing severe health system shortages.
Additionally, the installation of modern communication network equipment has begun, promising essential phone and internet services crucial for distance education, healthcare, and administrative communication.
