A 45-year-old man who staged a solitary protest atop a high water tower in Beni Mellal’s Oulad Youssef commune died in hospital after days in intensive care.

The protester had sustained life-threatening injuries after jumping from the structure last week.

The man had been camping atop the tank for 18 days in a one-man protest, resisting repeated intervention efforts by local authorities, members of the Regional Human Rights Commission, and relatives who urged him to come down.

In a dramatic escalation, he reportedly feigned illness to lure civil protection officers to the top of the tank, where he then attacked one of them with a sharp object and pushed him off. The officer suffered multiple fractures and underwent emergency surgery.

Shortly after, the protester tied a rope around his neck and jumped. Though he was rushed to the regional hospital in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning.
