A federal judge ruled Friday that the Department of Homeland Security must stop making immigration arrests in Los Angeles based solely on race, language, or occupation., CNN reported.
US District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, appointed by President Biden, found that DHS conducted unconstitutional stops and arrests without reasonable suspicion and failed to justify its actions with evidence.
“This Court decides—based on all the evidence presented—that they are,” Frimpong wrote, according to CNN.
The ruling followed a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California on behalf of five individuals and advocacy groups, alleging rights violations and denial of legal counsel.
