The European Council of Imams denounced a recent visit by a group of European-based imams to Israel, where they met President Isaac Herzog and army spokesperson Avichay Adraee.
The council said the delegation members are unknown within recognized religious institutions in Europe and accused the visit of serving “provocative, suspicious agendas” unrelated to the European Muslim community’s solidarity with Gaza.
Following backlash, Bilal Mosque in Alkmaar, Netherlands, dismissed a Moroccan-origin imam who joined the trip.
The mosque clarified the imam acted in a personal capacity and no longer holds any role within the institution.
The visit, organized by the European Leadership Network to promote Muslim-Jewish coexistence, sparked outrage online, particularly after videos showed the imams with Israeli officials.
The council warned against efforts to “whitewash” Israeli military actions in Gaza and urged unified support for Palestinians, condemning such visits as “betrayal.”
