The separatist Polisario Front on Friday claimed responsibility for a rocket strike in Morocco’s southeastern border zone near the city of Samara, its first official acknowledgment of involvement in the incident.
The attack caused no human casualties or material damage, authorities confirmed.
In a statement issued by its so-called “Ministry of Defense,” the group said it had targeted what it described as “enemy military positions” near Samara using rocket units and projectiles, without specifying exact locations or detailing the nature of the targets.
According to local sources who spoke to Hespress AR, four projectiles landed early Friday morning near a United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO) compound in an uninhabited area, far from civilian or military infrastructure.
The attack comes as MINURSO continues to monitor the security situation in southern Morocco amid growing international warnings about the risk of military escalation in the region.
Global actors have increasingly called for restraint and the preservation of regional stability.
This development also coincides with heightened interest in the U.S. Congress, where a bipartisan proposal , led by Republican Senator Joe Wilson and Democratic Representative Jimmy Panetta, seeks to designate the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization.
