Health officials in the UK have launched a new study to investigate links between GLP-1 weight loss and diabetes drugs, like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, and serious pancreatic side effects, including fatal cases of pancreatitis.
Data from the MHRA shows hundreds of suspected cases of acute and chronic pancreatitis linked to GLP-1 drugs. These include 181 reports for tirzepatide (Mounjaro) with five deaths, and over 100 cases each for semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy), liraglutide, and exenatide.
The Yellow Card Biobank—a joint initiative between the MHRA and Genomics England—will examine whether genetic factors increase risk. Hospitalized patients are being asked to submit reports and saliva samples to support the study.
Dr. Alison Cave, MHRA’s chief safety officer, said the findings could help predict who is most at risk, potentially improving drug safety and personalizing treatment.
Roughly 1.5 million people in the UK are currently using GLP-1-based weight loss medications.
