The inauguration on Monday of a Moroccan consulate general in Miami, Florida, was welcomed by many US officials as a sign of the dynamism of bilateral relations between two countries linked by historical relations and a strategic partnership.
This consulate is “not just a bridge between Morocco and Miami, or between a country and a city or a region even of the United States,” said Miami mayor, Francis Suarez, who took part in the inauguration ceremony along with Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, and consul general, Chafika El Habti.
It can also play the role of a link between Africa, America and Latin America, Suarez told MAP, adding: “now you’re talking about three continents with over a billion people and tremendous economic opportunities”.
Recalling the direct flights routes between Miami and Casablanca, and the large Moroccan community living in the Floridian city, the mayor noted that “it’s very natural that, if you have the Eastern Northeastern covered with New York [consulate], that you should have the southern part of the United States covered with Miami.”

Speaking of the Moroccan community in Miami, Suarez said “it’s a community that has a lot of pride in being Moroccan, but they also love being in Miami, and they see a lot of synergies.” He added that “their enthusiasm for the connection is going to drive that progress.”
For his part, mayor of Hollywood (Florida), Josh Levy, hailed the presence of a large Moroccan community in his city, applauding their commitment and their investment drive.
“We have a lot of people to people connections,” Levy said, adding that he was confident that “through this consulate, we’ll be able to grow that into more investment and through more visitation and develop the relationship even more so.”
In a similar statement to MAP, Boynton Beach mayor, Rebecca Shelton, said the opening of a consulate in Miami “shows an open door policy,” noting that the choice of this city “that has so much of our finance sector,” opens up the way “to forge good things together.”.
Former Broward County mayor, Dale Holness, also hailed the choice of opening a consulate in a region that is “actually the economic engine for the state of Florida, with 22 million people here.”
Thanks to its ports and airports, Miami, Holness maintained, is “connected to the world like no other place in the Americas. That’s why we’re often referred to as the capital of the Americas.”
The inauguration ceremony of this consulate, which serves up to 20 States throughout the southern part of the United States, took place in presence of several US elected officials and businesspeople, and a number of Moroccans living in the larger southern area.
