Morocco is poised to become a key AI hub as Korean tech giant Naver announced on Friday its plans to build a next-generation artificial intelligence data center in the country.
The project will be developed through a global consortium with Nvidia, Nexus Core Systems, and international investment company Lloyds Capital.
Strategically located near Europe and wired with key subsea fiber connections, Morocco offers the digital infrastructure needed to serve Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), making it a natural choice for the new AI hub.
The project envisions a renewable energy-powered data center with a total capacity of 500 megawatts. Development will begin in Q4 2025 with an initial 40-megawatt phase featuring Nvidia’s latest Blackwell GPUs.
Naver Cloud, alongside Nexus Core Systems and Lloyds Capital, will operate the platform, offering integrated AI services on a sovereign cloud infrastructure.
With rising demands in EMEA for local data governance and digital independence, the center plans to ensure all storage, processing, and management remain within Moroccan jurisdiction, addressing growing concerns around data control and AI infrastructure reliance.
To power the project, the consortium signed a deal with TAQA Morocco –a key player in the country’s energy sector– to ensure a stable supply of renewable energy.
The initiative highlights Morocco’s growing role in global tech infrastructure. Chae Sun-joo, Naver’s head of strategic business, emphasized the company’s goal to support technological sovereignty while building competitive global AI services, calling the project a “pivotal moment” for Naver.
Morocco’s involvement not only cements its position in the digital economy but also aligns with international trends favoring secure, energy-efficient AI computing.
