Between 2021 and 2025, over 1,700 attempted illegal entries into the United States were recorded by Moroccan nationals, according to new data from the US Department of Homeland Security. While far below the 15,000 attempts by Mauritanians, the figure signals a shift in North African migration patterns.
Many Moroccans undertake treacherous routes through Latin America, including the dangerous Darien Gap in Panama, often guided by increasingly organized smuggling networks.
The US is tightening its response, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement planning to deport 495 Moroccans among 1.4 million with pending removal orders.
Despite this, legal migration continues. In 2023, over 4,000 US visas were issued to Moroccans, including 2,554 through the Diversity Visa Lottery. Family reunification also accounts for a significant share.
