A 15-year-old Moroccan student, Houria Bachikh from Smara, has designed an innovative science experiment focused on growing plants in space to feed astronauts. Her big idea aims to find new ways to provide food in a zero-gravity environment.

Houria’s project, a winner in a huge international competition by the Saudi Space Agency that saw over 80,000 participants, specifically tests if fenugreek and lentil plants can adapt and grow under microgravity conditions. This groundbreaking work earned her a spot among the top ten winners.

Her experiment is scheduled to be flown into space on Wednesday, June 11, to be conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), launching from a Saudi base.

Houria’s passion for space sciences stems from her active involvement in the “Gifts of the Sky for Meteors and Meteorites” association. Her father, Mr. Mouloud Bachikh, presides over this association, which operates from the Smara city. The organization actively promotes scientific culture and fosters research in meteorites and space sciences, providing a nurturing and stimulating environment for Houria’s budding talent.
