A recent report by Washington-based Energy Platform has spotlighted Morocco’s top five mines, portraying them as pillars of the country’s mineral wealth and a cornerstone of its national and continental economic ambitions. The report highlights the sector’s diversity, strategic value, and Morocco’s competitive edge in global mining.
Leading the list is the Khouribga mine, Morocco’s largest phosphate basin , which alone supplies around 70% of OCP Group’s output. With historical significance dating back to 1921, Khouribga is linked to the Jorf Lasfar port via the world’s longest gravity-powered pipeline, cutting water use and transport costs.
The Benguerir and Youssoufia sites, together known as the Gantour complex, rank as the world’s third-largest phosphate hub, accounting for 37% of Morocco’s reserves. Benguerir uses modern flotation technology, while Youssoufia, operational since 1931, is the second-oldest phosphate mine in the country.
In the south near Ouarzazate lies the Bou Azzer mine, one of the few global sources of pure cobalt, a critical metal in battery production. Operated by Managem, Bou Azzer plays a key role in supplying global manufacturers like BMW.
The Imider mine in Tinghir province is one of Africa’s leading silver producers. Managed by SMI, it is one of Morocco’s oldest mines and contributes significantly to local employment and regional development.
Meanwhile, the Tizert copper project in Taroudant is set to become one of the country’s largest copper producers, with a projected annual output of 3.6 million tons. Operated by Managem, Tizert is on track to become Morocco’s first fully digitized copper mine through a partnership with Epiroc.
The report underscores the importance of Morocco’s mining sector, supported by major players like OCP and Managem, in driving GDP, job creation, and innovation. With 22 copper and 14 silver mining projects in place as of 2022, the government and private sector are increasingly focused on sustainability, digitization, and reducing environmental impact.
These mines, the report notes, not only reflect Morocco’s resource abundance but also its strategic position in shaping the global green economy.
