The United Nations posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal to Corporal Karim Temara, a Moroccan peacekeeper who died in 2024 while serving with the Royal Armed Forces contingent in MONUSCO, the UN’s stabilization mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The medal was presented by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the annual ceremony honoring UN personnel who died in peacekeeping missions. Moroccan Ambassador Omar Hilale and Colonel Najim Assid were present.
This year’s ceremony paid tribute to 57 peacekeepers killed in 2023 and over 4,400 since 1948. Guterres praised their ultimate sacrifice, calling peace “the most noble cause of humanity.”
The UN also decorated three Moroccan officers stationed in New York, acknowledging Morocco’s substantial role in peacekeeping. With 1,714 troops deployed in MONUSCO and MINUSCA, Morocco ranks among the top ten troop-contributing countries.
Ambassador Hilale extended condolences and saluted the dedication of Moroccan peacekeepers under King Mohammed VI’s guidance.
