The average annual number of households benefiting from the Slum Free Cities program rose from 6,200 between 2018 and 2021 to nearly 18,500 between 2021 and 2025, according to the Secretary of State in charge of Housing, Adib Benbrahim.
During a question session in the Lower House on Monday, Benbrahim emphasized that the current government term has witnessed a significant acceleration in slum clearance efforts, highlighting the notably positive results achieved so far.
He also explained that these achievements are the result of a coherent and effective strategy implemented by the Ministry in close coordination with the various relevant ministerial departments.
This program has enabled the declaration of 62 cities and urban centers as slum-free, and improved the living conditions of over 366,000 families, the government official stated.
He added that around 74,000 households are currently concerned by housing units that have either been completed or are under construction.
These “encouraging” figures were achieved despite the constraints that have hindered the program’s application in the field, particularly the ongoing rise in the number of eligible families.
Regarding the main difficulties encountered during the implementation of the program’s first phase, the secretary of state mentioned notably the slow self-build process of rehousing projects on plots of land.
The Slum Free Cities program, launched in 2004 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is one of the big projects implemented to remove unsanitary housing in Morocco and improve the living conditions of the concerned populations, he said.
The official also noted that the program reached 270,000 targeted families in 85 cities and urban centers.
