Spain’s Ministry of Transport has trimmed the budget for its ambitious undersea tunnel project connecting Spain and Morocco through the Strait of Gibraltar, from €2.43 billion to €1.63 billion.
The adjustment, confirmed by the Spanish agency overseeing the project is due to a decision to drop the exploratory tunnel and reduce alternative route studies.
The tunnel aims to form a strategic link between Europe and Africa, integrating both continents into the Euro-Mediterranean transport network via one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. Despite the budget cut, the project remains a major geopolitical and economic priority.
Public engineering firm INECO is conducting feasibility and demand studies, with proposed routes narrowed to areas between Algeciras and Tarifa. The infrastructure is expected to boost trade, logistics, and mobility across the strait.
German tunneling firm Herrenknecht continues to evaluate technical viability and is expected to deliver its final assessment by June.
