Minister of Housing and Urban Policy Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri revealed Friday that five families rejected an evacuation order in 2018 for the building that collapsed this week in the Hay Hassani neighborhood, killing nine and injuring several others.
In an exclusive statement to Hespress AR, El Mansouri said the building was flagged by local authorities seven years ago as a high-risk structure with imminent danger of collapse.
The evacuation order, based on what she described as “precise technical and scientific data,” led eight families to leave, while five others refused.
The fatal overnight collapse prompted ongoing search-and-rescue operations amid fears that more residents could be trapped under the rubble. Civil defense teams were deployed quickly to secure surrounding buildings that may also be at risk.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” said El Mansouri, who expressed the government’s grief over the tragedy. She added that emergency services responded immediately, and the injured were taken to Al Ghassani Hospital for treatment.
Authorities continue efforts to clear debris and determine the structural integrity of neighboring properties, while investigations are expected to examine why evacuation orders were not fully enforced.
