The Democratic Republic of Congo said in an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affair that a memorandum of understanding signed between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and a representative of the Polisario on April 2 in Gaborone does not bind the DRC in any way.

The statement, released Wednesday in Kinshasa, clarified that the DRC was not a party to this signing and that the SADC’s communication regarding the memorandum does not reflect the DRC’s official position.

The ministry emphasized that the document in question is not legally binding, affirming that the DRC remains free to determine its sovereign stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue.

The Congolese government reiterated its firm support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this position aligns with the DRC’s consistent foreign policy, which has always underscored respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Kinshasa also expressed its steadfast support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as a realistic and serious initiative that represents “the best solution” for resolving the dispute within the framework of the United Nations.

The statement further highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy proposal for the Sahara combines practical governance with a developmental vision, reflecting Morocco’s commitment to achieving a lasting and balanced resolution.
