Experts urge action as Morocco faces rising temperatures and water loss

Soaring temperatures across Morocco are renewing concerns over the country’s fragile water resources, with experts calling for innovative measures to mitigate the growing threat of evaporation from the nation’s dams.

The early onset of heatwaves has raised fears that Morocco could endure another scorching summer, exacerbated by global climate change. Rising temperatures are expected to accelerate the evaporation of millions of cubic meters of water, placing further strain on the country’s already scarce supplies.

Water expert Abdelrahim Hindouf said Morocco typically suffers significant water losses during July and August, estimating that about 2,000 cubic meters per hectare could evaporate each month. Speaking to local media, Hindouf proposed the adoption of floating solar panels — a technology already in use in China — to both conserve water and enhance solar energy production.

“This technique would allow us to save space for solar fields, curb evaporation, and increase the efficiency of solar panels, which tend to perform poorly under high heat,” he said.

Environmental and climate expert Mohamed Benabou warned that Morocco’s water supplies are particularly vulnerable during periods of extreme heat, adding that reservoirs could be depleted “in the blink of an eye” if current trends continue.

Benabou cited China’s use of floating solar farms and other technologies, such as covering dam surfaces with floating spheres, as successful models Morocco could replicate.

With Morocco classified among the countries most impacted by climate change, experts stress the urgency of adopting proactive measures. Benabou warned that persistent rises in global emissions mean temperature extremes are likely to worsen in the coming years.
