Nearly half a decade after Morocco’s only Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, head coach Walid Regragui says the Atlas Lions are fully committed to bringing the trophy home when the country hosts the 2025 tournament.
“We are all going to give everything we have to win the next Africa Cup,” Regragui said on Tuesday night on the Spanish football talk show El Chiringuito, broadcast on Mega TV.
“Lifting this trophy at home, in front of our fans, is not just a goal for the national team, it’s a dream for the whole country,” he added.
Regragui, who led Morocco to a historic semifinal run at the 2022 World Cup, praised the quality and maturity of his current squad, emphasizing their hunger and potential to deliver a long-awaited continental triumph.
“I am determined to win this AFCON. Morocco is a true footballing nation and we deserve this title,” he said. “The passion for the game here is unmatched. Not a single day goes by without fans reminding me how much they want this.”
Looking ahead to the 2030 World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, Regragui expressed hope that the final match could be played on Moroccan soil, citing the country’s growing ambitions and its remarkable showing in Qatar.
The interview also revisited Morocco’s stunning 2022 World Cup campaign and explored Regragui’s career, both as a player and a coach. The Moroccan manager also shared his thoughts on the UEFA Champions League and discussed the broader landscape of European football.
