Morocco’s fisheries sector currently supports around 260,000 direct jobs, underscoring its role as a key contributor to employment and economic activity, according to Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries, Zakia Driouich.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Monday, Driouich said employment in the sector includes 131,000 positions onboard fishing vessels, 126,000 in seafood processing units, and 1,400 in aquaculture. Thousands more jobs are indirectly linked to the industry, she added.
Driouich attributed the sector’s resilience to Morocco’s “Halieutis” strategy, which emphasizes sustainability, value-chain integration, and competitiveness. She noted that 96% of overall landings are now managed sustainably, thanks to enhanced scientific research and reinforced monitoring systems.
The official also highlighted targeted support for seafood processing industries and measures aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and the formation of cooperatives in the wholesale fish trade.
“Fisheries remain a strategic lever for job creation across coastal regions,” Driouich said, adding that the sector’s structured growth has helped expand employment opportunities and strengthen Morocco’s positioning as a regional maritime hub.
