China on Wednesday advised its citizens to carefully evaluate risks before traveling to the United States, citing escalating trade tensions and concerns over public safety.
The advisory, issued by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, comes in the wake of Beijing’s decision to raise tariffs on American goods, a retaliatory move against a series of trade measures imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“In light of the deteriorating China-U.S. trade relations and the domestic security situation in the United States, we advise Chinese tourists to fully assess the risks before making travel plans to the U.S.,” the ministry said in a statement.
The move underscores growing diplomatic strain between the world’s two largest economies, which has spilled over into multiple sectors—including tourism. The travel warning may further dampen the number of Chinese visitors to the U.S., a group that has historically contributed billions to the American tourism industry.
It remains unclear how long the advisory will remain in effect, but it marks a new low in a trade dispute that continues to escalate despite repeated calls for dialogue.
