Report: Morocco ramps up solar energy efforts with big plans and key partnerships

Morocco is ramping up efforts to increase clean energy in its electricity mix through large-scale projects and stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors, according to a new report by British firm Solar Power Europe.

According to the report, Morocco has huge potential for solar power, particularly in the south. Large solar projects are being developed to link sun-rich areas to the country’s main electricity hubs in the north, improving efficiency and ensuring better energy distribution.

Wind power is also a major opportunity with strong wind conditions in areas like Tangier, Tetouan, and Essaouira, where wind speeds reach around 7 meters per second.

Even stronger winds—up to 10 meters per second—are recorded in southern coastal regions like Tarfaya and Lagouira, making them ideal for wind farms.

To cut down on fossil fuel use, Morocco has set an ambitious target: by 2030, at least 52% of its total installed energy capacity should come from renewables, including solar, wind, and hydropower. If achieved, this would make Morocco a regional leader in the shift to clean energy.

Despite these efforts, Morocco still has untapped solar potential. While the country has focused on concentrated solar power (CSP), progress in photovoltaic (PV) solar projects has been slower due to delays and challenges in connecting them to the grid.

European investors are showing strong interest in Morocco’s solar sector, but the report says the country needs to continue reforming its energy market.

To speed up progress, the report suggests introducing tax breaks on solar equipment, financial incentives for renewable energy infrastructure, and new funding options like green bonds and low-interest loans.

Encouraging industries with high energy use to invest in renewables and allowing businesses to generate their own electricity could also help accelerate the transition.

Another opportunity is exporting electricity to neighboring countries. The report recommends setting competitive export tariffs, securing energy trade deals, and improving infrastructure for cross-border energy sales.
