Moroccans trust scientists, but prefer them to stay out of politics

Moroccans have a generally positive view of scientists, but when it comes to scientists taking an active role in politics, Moroccans are more hesitant, says a Global Study on Trust in Scientists & Science-related Populism.

According to the study, three African countries were in the top five countries where scientists are most trusted: Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya.

While many believe scientists should work closely with politicians to integrate scientific knowledge into decision-making, around 37% strongly agree with this idea. But there is still some hesitation, with 17% strongly disagreeing.

When it comes to scientists actively advocating for specific policies, skepticism grows. 40% strongly disagree, suggesting concerns about scientists taking a political stance rather than just providing information.

Only 20% strongly agree, showing that while some support exists, it is not widespread. However, communication between scientists and politicians is seen as more important.

About 44% strongly agree that scientists should share their findings with policymaker, while only 15% are strongly opposed.

Similarly, 32% strongly agree that scientists should be more involved in policymaking overall, though resistance remains, with 21% strongly disagreeing.

The strongest consensus is on science communication with the public.

A solid 61% strongly agree that scientists should actively explain science to everyday people. Only a small portion, about 6%, strongly disagree with this idea, showing that Moroccans generally value science outreach.

The study showed that 83% of people worldwide believe scientists should engage more with the public and make their research more accessible.

In some African countries, like Ghana and Uganda, there was a strong demand for scientists to be more involved in public discussions.

Experts say that public trust in science should not be blind but informed, meaning people need access to clear and reliable scientific information to make their own judgments.
