Paraguay is considering the export of live cattle to countries like Morocco, responding to the growing demand from importers in the Middle East and North Africa, according to  Paraguayan daily newspaper ABC Color.

The same source suggested that although Paraguay has experience in this sector, having previously traded livestock with nations like Brazil and Argentina, it is now working on the best strategies to overcome logistical challenges and successfully facilitate its first shipment.

“We have begun conducting all necessary analyses and studies to understand the logistical implications of exporting live cattle from Paraguay, given that it is a landlocked country,” said the president of the Paraguayan Association of Meat Producers and Exporters (APPEC), Ramiro Maluff.

The Paraguayan daily newspaper stated that “if exports to the Moroccan market are finalized, the shipments would involve a minimum of 2,500 head of animals weighing between 200 and 300 kilos.”

Maluff pointed out that Paraguay has previously exported live cattle to neighboring countries in Latin America via air transport. However, the considerable distance to Morocco presents a significant logistical challenge, emphasizing that no final agreement has been reached yet.

Media reports suggested that Paraguayan producers are exploring live cattle exports to markets beyond Morocco to boost profits, ease domestic meat price pressure, and address concerns over export concentration, which is dominated by the two largest meatpacking companies.

For context, Paraguay’s meat industry is also taking strategic steps to expand its presence in Morocco’s beef market, with plans to double its current export volume of 4,500 tons.
