The first court session for seven individuals, six in pretrial detention and one on temporary release, begins this Thursday afternoon at the Sefrou Primary Court.
The accused were arrested following protests on Monday against soaring prices of vegetables, fruits, and fish at the weekly market in Rabat El Kheir (Ahremoumou).
The public prosecutor’s office at the Sefrou Primary Court decided on Wednesday to prosecute five suspects on charges of “impersonating a public official and performing related duties, threatening acts of violence and property damage, inciting criminal offenses through public speeches and threats, resisting law enforcement decisions, and participating in a riot that led to injuries.”
Additionally, one of the accused faces charges of “possessing a bladed weapon under circumstances that endanger public safety,” while another is charged with “spreading false claims and defamatory content” after live-streaming the market events on Facebook.
The Royal Gendarmerie of Sefrou had initially referred 14 suspects to the prosecutor’s office following the market clashes between traders and customers.
After placing 12 individuals in police custody for questioning, authorities decided to prosecute seven while dropping charges against the rest.
