Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is set to visit Saudi Arabia on Monday, marking his first foreign trip since his election in January.

His election, which ended a two-year presidential vacancy amid Lebanon’s deep political and economic crisis, was supported by both Riyadh and Washington. It followed the weakening of Hezbollah due to the devastating conflict with Israel.

Aoun, a former army commander, has chosen Saudi Arabia as his first destination due to the country’s historic ties with Lebanon and its regional influence.

The visit aims to rebuild relations, which had soured after Saudi Arabia suspended a $3 billion military aid package to Lebanon in 2016, protesting Hezbollah’s influence.

During the visit, Aoun hopes to request the resumption of military aid. He emphasized the importance of economic and diplomatic ties, expressing optimism for a stronger partnership under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 development plan.
