Sunday 2 March 2025 - 21:58

Morocco has made significant strides in the global academic landscape, with 54 universities and research institutions recognized in the 2025 “AD” scientific index. More than 6,288 Moroccan researchers have been ranked based on precise criteria, including citation indices and academic publications. The country now holds the sixth position in Africa and ranks 75th globally in scientific research.

Leading Universities and Research Institutions

At the forefront of Moroccan academia is Mohammed V University in Rabat, ranked first nationally, 26th regionally, and 1,454th globally. Following closely is Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, which secured the second national position, 36th regionally, and 1,912th worldwide, reflecting its growing investment in research and development. Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech also demonstrated strong performance, ranking third in Morocco, 39th regionally, and 1,974th globally.

Beyond universities, Morocco’s top research institutions have also gained international recognition. The National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) leads the way, ranking 1,619th worldwide, underscoring its pivotal role in agricultural research. The Pasteur Institute of Morocco, positioned at 1,753rd globally, highlights its critical contributions to medical and health research. Meanwhile, the National Center for Energy, Science, and Nuclear Technology (CNESTEN) ranks 1,912th, reinforcing its status as a key player in nuclear research and energy development.

Moroccan Researchers’ Global Impact

The rankings also shed light on the presence of Moroccan researchers in global academia. Mohammed V University leads, with:

  • 6 researchers among the top 3% worldwide
  • 25 researchers among the top 10%
  • 76 researchers among the top 20%
  • 118 researchers among the top 30%

Similarly, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University has:

  • 2 researchers in the top 3%
  • 17 researchers in the top 10%
  • 33 researchers in the top 20%
  • 48 researchers in the top 30%

Cadi Ayyad University follows with:

  • 1 researcher in the top 3%
  • 16 researchers in the top 10%
  • 36 researchers in the top 20%
  • 62 researchers in the top 30%

These figures illustrate Morocco’s academic presence while also highlighting the need to expand its global influence by increasing the number of highly ranked researchers.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite these achievements, Morocco still lags behind regional leaders such as Egypt and South Africa, which boast a higher number of globally ranked researchers and stronger publication and citation rates. To bridge this gap, Moroccan institutions must:

  • Enhance scientific output by fostering a more advanced research environment
  • Increase investments in innovation and technology
  • Strengthen international partnerships to elevate their academic standing

A Bright Future with Room for Growth

Morocco’s progress in scientific research is undeniable, with an increasing number of researchers gaining global recognition and universities climbing international rankings. However, significant challenges remain. A sustainable investment strategy in research infrastructure and innovation will be crucial for Morocco to solidify its place among the world’s top academic players.
