Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic acknowledged on Feb. 24 that Serbia mistakenly voted in favor of a U.N. resolution that condemned Russia as an aggressor state in the Ukraine conflict. The resolution, approved by the U.N. General Assembly, passed with 93 votes in favor and 18 against, including the U.S.
Vucic explained that Serbia was supposed to abstain from voting, taking responsibility for the error. “I believe Serbia made a mistake today. I apologize to the citizens and take the blame. I was probably too tired and overwhelmed,” he said.
Serbia has maintained a friendly relationship with Russia and has refused to impose sanctions on Moscow in response to the invasion.
