The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, officially launched its confederation flag Saturday in Bamako, marking a key step in strengthening the regional bloc nearly a month after the three nations exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement that the flag’s design was approved by the heads of state of the three countries. The flag is rectangular with a green background and features the AES confederation’s logo at its center.
“The color green, often associated with growth, symbolizes hope, prosperity, and renewal,†the statement said, adding that it also represents the region’s vast natural resources, seen as a foundation for future shared prosperity.
Formed in July 2024, the AES has taken steps to establish itself as a functioning alliance. Currently chaired by Mali, the bloc has introduced mechanisms for financing its economic and social policies.
The three member states have also announced that new AES passports will be issued starting January 29, 2025. To facilitate the transition, existing national passports will remain valid until their expiration dates, with an option for holders to replace them with AES documents under established procedures.
Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso formally withdrew from ECOWAS at the end of January, citing sovereignty concerns and disagreements over regional governance. In response, ECOWAS has set a six-month transition period to outline withdrawal terms and continue diplomatic efforts aimed at reintegrating the three countries into the bloc.
