The “detention” of British tourist in a private clinic in Marrakesh, due to her inability to pay for heart attack treatment, has sparked widespread outrage on social media.
Collette Robinson, 58, was on a break in Morocco when she had a heart attack and taken to a private clinic in Marrakech where she now needs over 270 thousand dirhams to cover her bills.
The National Observatory for the Fight Against Corruption and the Protection of Public Funds condemned the incident, stating that it tarnishes Morocco’s image as a global tourist destination and undermines the fundamental rights to healthcare and human dignity.
The Observatory called for an immediate investigation into the incident and urged strict measures to prevent similar occurrences.
It emphasized that medical practice should be a humanitarian and ethical responsibility, not a commercial one. The right to treatment, especially in emergencies, should not depend on a patient’s financial ability.
The Observatory also called for hospitals to provide clear, detailed billing, and for stricter regulation of private clinics to ensure transparency and adherence to professional ethics, ensuring that health care remains a human right.
