“Science is under threat in many parts of the world,” warned Fouad Laaroui, professor of epistemology, at a press conference Sunday at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Benguerir, where the fifth edition of Science Week will be held from February 17 to 23, 2025, under the theme “Shaping the Future.”
Laaroui emphasized that science is thus at the heart of the university’s ambitions, making this event an opportunity to bring together world-renowned experts and leaders in their fields, providing them with a platform to share their knowledge.
He underscored that Science Week is one of UM6P’s most significant annual events, dedicated to celebrating science and scientists.
Laaroui explained that during Science Week, top scientists create their own programs and invite colleagues—often leading figures in their respective disciplines from around the world. “This means that, for an entire week, we bring some of the greatest names in science to UM6P,” he underscored, encouraging students to engage with them.
The professor highlighted, “we’ve invited absolute geniuses in previous editions, and here—unlike in other settings—they take the time to have conversations with students, far more than they typically would back home or with their peers.”
Laaroui also stressed that Science Week serves as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange, encouraging students to step outside their primary fields, explore new disciplines, and gain insights that could benefit their own research in the future.
This year’s edition aims to bring together the global scientific community to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the world of tomorrow. UM6P seeks to establish the event as a space for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, bridging fundamental sciences, emerging technologies, and societal issues.
The event is planned to cover a wide range of topics, including Artificial Intelligence, algorithms, agriculture and agroecology, future careers, new materials, the challenges of AI in medicine, innovation, the mine of the future, the Anthropocene, sustainability challenges, the question of human intelligence versus machines, and the intersections between science, ethics, and philosophy.
Through a series of conferences, workshops, and roundtables, researchers, experts, and entrepreneurs will explore scientific advances and their impact on society, the economy, and the environment.
