An analysis by Oxford University’s Centre on Migration, Policy and Society has revealed that the UK’s skilled worker visa system includes some surprising middle-skilled jobs, such as dog walkers, DJs, Pilates instructors, and even “costume interpreters” who dress in historical attire at museums, the Guardian revealed.

Home Office data from the past three years shows that 334 visas were issued for animal care roles like dog groomers and kennel assistants, while 167 visas went to fitness and wellbeing instructors, including yoga teachers and lifestyle coaches.

These roles are among over 300 designated jobs eligible for visas, following post-Brexit changes that lowered the skills threshold, allowing more middle-skilled positions to qualify.

This comes as the UK government prepares a white paper to tighten immigration rules and link visas to critical skills, aiming to reduce overall migration while boosting the domestic workforce.
