The Moroccan-Mauritanian Joint Commission for Fisheries and Aquaculture was held on Friday on the sidelines of the “Halieutis” trade fair in Agadir, co-chaired by the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Zakia Driouich, and Mauritania’s Minister for Fisheries, Maritime and Port Infrastructures, El Vadil Sidaty Ahmed Louly.

The second session of this Joint Sectoral Commission is held as part of the cooperation agreement between the two countries in fisheries and aquaculture, and the effective implementation of the provisions of the said agreement, signed in Rabat on March 11, 2022.

During this session, both parties praised the quality of the age-old relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, which are based on mutual respect and serious, fruitful cooperation, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, while emphasizing the key role played by the fisheries and aquaculture sector in these relations.

The first fisheries cooperation agreements between the parties were signed in 1979 and 2000.

At the end of the session, Driouich and Louly signed the minutes of the second session of the Joint Commission, reflecting their willingness to translate these political ties into tangible results in areas of mutual interest.

In addition, on the sidelines of this second meeting of the Joint Commission, three new agreements were signed to strengthen cooperation in fisheries research and maritime training.

The third maritime training agreement was signed between Agadir’s Higher Institute of Maritime Fisheries (ISPM) and the Higher Institute of Ocean Sciences (ISSM) in Nouadhibou, and covers the development of quality training courses and new training courses in the processing of fish products.

The main thrusts of the Commission’s work, and of the framework agreements signed, are to design and implement cooperative actions in the fields of maritime training, scientific and technical research, aquaculture, fisheries management, industries for processing and adding value to fisheries products, the fight against IUU fishing, maritime salvage, the marketing of fisheries products, as well as strengthening the partnership framework between professionals, particularly in the private sector, and exchanging expertise, experience and best practices in this field.
