Morocco’s Secretary of State for Fisheries, Zakia Driouich, and the Libyan Minister of Marine Resources signed a memorandum of understanding in the fields of maritime fishing and aquaculture, on Thursday on the sidelines of the Halieutis Fair in Agadir.
This agreement reflects both countries’ drive, under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI and His Excellency the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, to enhance sectoral cooperation and foster mutually beneficial partnerships for sustainable fisheries resource management and the development of their respective blue economies.
It also expresses the two countries’ shared will to strengthening their historic ties and cooperation, with a focus on the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
Morocco and Libya agreed on a structured framework for enhanced collaboration, recognizing the strategic role of fishing and aquaculture in economic and social development, as well as their contribution to food security.
The main provisions of the agreement cover several strategic areas, including capacity building through training and exchanges of expertise, scientific cooperation through joint research, improving the processing and marketing of seafood products, as well as monitoring and controlling fishing activities.
It also encourages joint investments between economic actors and coordination in international forums to defend shared interests.
This MoU, initially valid for five years and renewable by tacit agreement, establishes a joint commission responsible for monitoring its implementation and evaluating the actions undertaken.
