Younes Tazi, governor of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, held a meeting on Thursday at Tangier Grand Stadium to assess the progress of its ongoing renovation, sources confirmed to local media.

The meeting, attended by various stakeholders and project officials, focused on expediting the construction work to ensure the stadium meets the standards required for hosting upcoming international tournaments. Governor El-Tazi reportedly urged all parties to intensify their efforts to complete the project as soon as possible.

The renovations are part of Morocco’s preparations to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled between December and January. Tangier is among the cities set to stage key matches during the tournament. The stadium is also a candidate for hosting games during the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

According to reports, the governor has been making frequent visits to the stadium over the past few weeks to oversee the progress. In a previous visit, he reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work, noting the limited number of workers on-site. This concern led to increased efforts, with construction companies ramping up workforce deployment and accelerating the pace of renovations.

Beyond the stadium itself, officials are also focused on upgrading the surrounding infrastructure, including roads, transportation, and hospitality services. The FIFA evaluation of Tangier’s infrastructure reportedly highlighted shortcomings, particularly in transportation and high-end accommodations, prompting authorities to prioritize these improvements. The city also recently faced challenges due to severe flooding, which underscored the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades ahead of major sporting events.
