The Moroccan poultry sector remains a key pillar of the national agricultural economy, generating an annual revenue of approximately 41.7 billion dirhams and providing around 150,000 direct and 350,000 indirect jobs, according to Ahmed El Bouari, Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests.

In response to a written question from MP Mohammed Hichami of the Haraki group, El Bouari highlighted that in 2023, Morocco produced 745,000 tons of poultry meat and 6.1 billion eggs, ensuring full domestic coverage of demand. Per capita consumption has risen to 20.6 kg of poultry meat and 169 eggs annually.

The minister attributed these results to the implementation of the Green Morocco Plan, under which the sector benefited from two program contracts between the government and the interprofessional federation of the poultry sector. These agreements (2008-2013 and 2011-2020) aimed to enhance efficiency, improve production quality, and reduce costs to strengthen competitiveness.

El Bouari also emphasized the impact of Law No. 49.99, which regulates health standards in poultry farming, production, and commercialization. Under the supervision of the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA), this law ensures strict veterinary inspections and compliance with regulatory health controls.

As part of the “Generation Green 2020-2030” strategy, a new program contract for 2021-2030 has been established. It targets an increase in production to 912,000 tons of poultry meat and 7.6 billion eggs while aiming for a 90% rate of sanitary control over poultry meat.

Addressing recent price increases, El Bouari noted that rising production costs, particularly due to fluctuations in the price of chicks, have affected the sector. These costs are influenced by supply and demand dynamics, leading to market price variations.

To ensure market stability, an annual monitoring committee meeting is held, bringing together all ministerial departments involved in the sector’s program contract. This committee assesses progress and proposes solutions to sector challenges.

The ministry also maintains strict oversight of national poultry supply, regulating exports and imports, monitoring poultry and egg production, and tracking farm prices. These efforts aim to ensure market continuity while safeguarding consumer purchasing power.
