The Casablanca-Settat region is accelerating efforts to establish the largest logistics hub in Morocco’s Nouaceur Province, a key infrastructure project in preparation for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Authorities have started clearing a 70-hectare plot of land for the hub, which has an estimated budget of 550 million dirhams ($53 million). During an extraordinary session last Thursday, the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council approved the project, set to be located in the Ouled Saleh Commune.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the regional governorate, and various local agencies, including the Moroccan Agency for Logistics Development and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises.
Once completed, the project is expected to create 1,400 direct jobs and attract investments totaling 1.7 billion dirhams ($164 million). Officials aim to enhance infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in the region, which is also planning similar industrial clusters in Zenata, Laghdira, and Had Soualem.
The project, however, has faced resistance from property owners in Ouled Saleh. Nineteen residents have already begun demolishing their homes, with compensation payments expected in the coming days.
Initially, the land transfer price was set at 130 dirhams ($12) per square meter but was raised to 200 dirhams ($19) after local officials lobbied the Interior Ministry. Lawmaker Nour Eddine, representing the National Rally of Independents party, addressed the issue in Parliament.
Local authorities have also demanded a review of compensation rates and housing solutions for displaced residents. The agency overseeing the project has agreed to pay 2,000 dirhams ($193) per square meter for surface damages, 1,000 dirhams ($96) for makeshift structures, and additional compensation for crops and other damages.
Authorities hope the logistics hub will bolster Morocco’s position as a regional economic and industrial leader, aligning with the country’s broader development goals.
