Morocco’s Minister of Tourism, Fatima Zahra said domestic tourism, which gained momentum during the pandemic, now accounts for a significant portion of Morocco’s tourism sector.
In 2024, domestic visitors recorded 8.5 million overnight stays in classified hotels, representing 30% of total hotel stays.
Ammor emphasized that the government is capitalizing on this trend by developing a diverse range of tourism products to appeal to Moroccan tourists, tailoring offerings to their purchasing power and interests.
The minister revealed that a key part of the government’s strategy involves promoting coastal tourism, nature-based experiences, and rural tourism.
Notable projects include Dino Park in Azilal, the Ifrane National Park, and the Toubkal region.
These initiatives are aimed at providing new attractions while improving regional accessibility. To further enhance connectivity, the government has launched new domestic flight routes and is working with airlines to reduce isolation for remote regions.
Ammor also highlighted the importance of strengthening the tourism sector’s infrastructure and capacity through the “Go Siyaha” program.
With a budget of 720 million MAD, this initiative is designed to support 1,700 small and medium-sized tourism businesses by 2026.
The program offers financial backing for tourism activities, accommodation, and entertainment projects. It covers up to 35% of investment in tourism activation, 30% for classified accommodation, and 40% for sustainable tourism projects.
Additionally, the ministry has introduced a digital platform to facilitate the development of over 200 model tourism projects across Morocco, showcasing diverse tourism chains in various regions.
Through these measures, Ammor expressed her commitment to promoting year-round domestic tourism, reducing seasonality, and creating sustainable job opportunities within the sector.
