The land border between Morocco and Melilla saw the crossing of the first commercial truck at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, according to Spanish news outlets.

Loaded with approximately 600 kilograms of household appliances and air conditioning units, the truck entered the Beni Ansar customs post in Nador province, marking a historic reopening of the commercial border after a six-year closure.

Quoting Juan Francisco Pérez Quiles, owner of the exporting company Agencia Quiles, Spanish media reported that the truck reached the Beni Ansar port two hours after clearing Spanish customs.

It explained that this export followed a failed attempt by the same company just a week earlier, which Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, attributed to technical issues that required resolution.

The same source added that the truck cleared Spanish customs smoothly and was inspected and approved by Moroccan authorities in the secured border zone. After paying taxes at the port and obtaining clearance by late afternoon, the vehicle continued its journey to Nador by 8 p.m.

It also mentioned that Sabrina Moh, the Spanish government delegate in Melilla, was present at the Beni Ansar border during the process.

She posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “today, goods were transported to Morocco through the commercial customs post in Melilla. This is another step toward normalizing the border and commercial customs operations.”

For context, Spain and Morocco conducted two pilot test runs for customs reopening in 2023, following Morocco’s commitment to reactivating the Melilla customs office and establishing a new one at Ceuta during the High-Level Meeting (RAN) held in Rabat in February of the same year.
